What's Happening at Pentre Mawr

We’re delighted to say that we’re very busy making improvements and refurbishments here at Pentre while we’re closed for the winter. But changes are coming. When we don’t have weddings or functions, we’re now offering self catering in our beautiful African Safari Lodges all with their private hot tubs or our Hot Tub Cottage Suites from April to September. Special offers are available and there will always be little surprises for those who are happy to book directly with us. Here’s more info Self Catering or please get in touch with our lovely Nina on pmwv@icloud.com

A personal story about visit to Buckingham Palace

In 2003 we had a lovely hotel called Sychnant Pass House just above Conwy. We’d won the AA Best Guest accommodation award and the Booker prize for Excellence in 2002. Both of these awards were such an honour but we had not idea where they would take us. In 2003 the attached invite arrived.

Invite to Buckingham Palace

We were astounded and excited. On the day we had the most amazing time and met all the royals. Of around 500 people, we were one of five couples and were presented to the the queen, Graham was the only man in a kilt and the queen asked about the tartan. It’s the Williams Welsh tartan as Williams was an ancestral name of his family. We chatted with the Duke of Edinburgh, who was just charming, talking about growing apples on the Sandringham estate. Prince Edward arrived late and we’d a long chat to him about his day. The Royals had been all over the country visiting tourist sites. The amount of work they got in was amazing and we both said that we didn’t envy their workload. The hospitality was wonderful though we were much too nervous to drink, it was sparkling water all the way. So with all the rest of the country we want to wish Her Majesty the happiest 70th anniversary and thank her and the rest of the Royals for all they do to promote tourism in the UK.

Wonderful Art Exhibition at Pentre Mawr

We’re truly excited to announce that two local artists, James Guy Eccleston and Abbie Hulson have chosen Pentre Mawr for their Autumn exhibition. Please come and enjoy a glass of bubbles while viewing their wonderful work in our gallery here at Pentre Mawr.

Many of our guests will already know our wonderful Abbie, who is not only a fantastic artist but our wedding coordinator in her spare time. North Wales countryside, coast and it's inhabitants has always been Abbie’s main subject matter, though her animal portraits are just amazing.

James Guy Eccleston's work is always meticulously composed and beautifully painted. I’ve always loved his paintings of fabrics. On our wedding anniversary, my lovely Graham, had my wedding dress painted by him. It’s one of my most treasured possessions. Both will be on display at the exhibition.

A Truly Wonderful Wedding with a Huge Difference

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged and I really wanted to share with you how we really do try to make each wedding as individual as possible here at Pentre Mawr and last weekend our wonderful couple, Sarah and Rafi took it to a whole new level!  So much so that I asked them if I could use their wedding story for this blog.    Please bear with me, it’s a bit longer than usual but worth the read for all couples thinking of getting married at Pentre Mawr or elsewhere.

So Covid happened and it left so many couples heartbroken when they couldn’t have their wedding on their chosen date.  For personal reasons, some decided to have a quiet ceremony in their local registry office instead of having the day they hoped for, putting off the bigger celebration to a time when they could do just that. This is exactly what happened here on Saturday.

The day arrived, Sarah and Rafi’s true wedding. I say true because the legal bit was done, we believe a wedding is about declaring your love and commitment to each other with you’re your friends and family looking on.   That’s exactly what they did on our Summer Terrace.  Sarah’s Dad walked her down the aisle with her lovely Mum, baby daughter and her two bridesmaids leading the way.

They wrote their own simple but beautiful vows and their lovely friend Pauline, conducted the ceremony.  There was lots of laughter and tears of joy.  The ceremony followed the regular theme but was so relaxed.    It should have started at 2pm. They also considered that the forecast wasn’t great for 2pm, but the legal bit was done!! So we could move it to earlier or later if necessary.   As it turned out, it wasn’t the weather that caused the delay, but lots of little ones who needed feeding, changing or just settling down. Sarah walked down the aisle around 2.30pm.

You may ask why I’m bothering to tell you this.   Over the last 18 months the couples we’ve managed to move successfully to a peak date, have struggled to get the wedding ceremony at the time they would have liked.  I’ve had one bride in tears as she could only get a 12 o’clock ceremony because the registrars are so busy. There are a limited number of registrars and being rural they’re travelling great distances in order to do two and three weddings in one day.  They must be exhausted.

More and more couples are looking at a celebrant ceremony, which you can have in any of the numerous locations at Pentre Mawr.  Our Secret Walled Garden is ideal for your wedding ceremony or the beautiful white pagoda with views over the Vale of Clwyd for the outdoor wedding of your dreams. Or you can really go wild at our newly built pagoda overlooking the pond.  You still have two beautiful indoor locations to relocate to:  Two rustic Red Bricked Barns and two marquees to make sure that you have cover on the occasional days it rains in Wales!  All locations give you the best of both worlds.  Decisions decisions!

We all love a good party but the reason for the celebration is the ceremony and it doesn’t have to be the same as anyone else’s.  In fact we think it should be totally unique to you while still keeping the traditions you believe in.

This weekend reminded me of several years ago we had a Christmas wedding where the couple were already married, they wanted a Christmas carol and reading at their wedding, but unfortunately it was not allowed at a legal ceremony.   The bride at the time told us that they’d gone to their local office with two friends, who kept their secret for them as their witnesses.   They said it was like signing for their house but not getting the keys till later in the week.   On their wedding day they had the usual bridesmaids and groomsmen and a celebrant to conduct the ceremony. But most of all they had the ceremony that they wanted.   It was wonderful.

I just wanted to share this with you and hope you have a wedding which is as memorable as this one was to us x

What about Weddings?

While the news looks good for re opening of pubs/ restaurants and even sports events, weddings couples and venues haven’t had any definite information about when we can expect to get back to normal.

“What About Weddings” has put together an open letter to the PM to ask him what his plans are for weddings? We’d be really grateful if you could take the time to sign it. Nearly everyone knows someone who’s wedding had been delayed by Covid 19. And while letter is mostly about England we expect that Wales and Scotland will follow suit once a plan is made. Open letter to the PM

Please be a Christmas Good Fairy and Grant a Wish!!

This is the time of year when every charity is looking for donations and yes I’m really sorry but so am I. I’ve started a Just Giving Page and here’s the story.

As most of our friends will know we spend much of our off time in South Africa. The country like so many is not in a great way at the moment. Unlike here there’s no real support from their government. So, I want to tell you all about a lovely man and someone I’m proud to call my friend. Over the years we’ve been supporting a creche in a little town called Alicedale in the Eastern Cape. Ricardo’s children used to go to the creche and when we first met him around 20 years ago, he was seriously involved in keeping the crèche going and helping wherever he could. Even though his little one’s are grown with children of their own, he still gives up his time freely to help whenever asked.

I’m a true believer that what goes around come around. This lovely man needs help. For us, in the first world, the shacks in the townships appear the most awful places to live but they are homes to many families like Ricardo’s. And when his shack was burned down and he lost all his worldly possession, the thankful thing was that his family were not in it at the time. The area where Alicedale is, is a huge tourist area, with game lodges being the main employers. Ricardo is a hardworking man and has thankfully kept his job but he is now supporting his three grown up daughters and their partners, and his two wonderful grandchildren. These people would love to have a job but Covid 19 has decimated the employment locally as Africa closed it’s doors to tourists.

I know it’s huge ask when things are so difficult here but each year for the last five years, we decided to support a charity rather than send Christmas cards. So, I’m asking, no I’m begging, you to consider spending a little less on fancy cards and pretty paper and to donate as little as £5 it’s only the cost of a glass of wine in your local to help Ricardo to put a roof over his head before the African winter comes in in May. He needs roughly £5000 to rebuild his home with bricks instead of wood and tin sheets and replace some of the basics, for 6 adults and two children. It’s a lot I know, but if everyone could just give £5 then the pot will soon grow.

Here’s a link to the Just Giving Page. Please, please, please help and if you can’t help please share.

Thank you for reading Ricardo’s story and have a happy and safe Christmas and a hopefully the happiest New Year in 2021

Weekend availability in a Safari Lodge with private hot tub.

Fancy spending a night in a genuine African Safari lodge and sitting in your own private hot tub under the stars in the quiet of the Welsh countryside. We have one lodge left for this weekend on our special offer

Special Break*

So many of our best ideas come from our South African travels. On our last visit we did a long road trip and many of the guesthouses and hotels we stayed at offered a light self-catering package. This meant that we had some facilities to self cater for breakfast and to accommodate heating up food, etc.

We thought it was a great idea, as it meant that we weren’t restricted to meal times and had more freedom to come and go as we pleased.

We’ve decided that we’d like to offer this to our guests as well. As we’re not offering servicing and there are no meals included in the price, we can reduce our rates considerably.  All the lodges have a hospitality area with kettle, toaster, Nespresso coffee machine, Fridge and microwave.   All cottage suites have full kitchens.   The fire officer has told us that no BBQ’s allowed by the lodges because for fire risk.

For two nights for two people in either a suite with a hot tub or a safari lodge with a hot tub the rate is £360 with a complimentary breakfast hamper of croissants, cereals, juice, fruit, bread, butter and preserves. Extra nights can be added for £100 per night.  As our Safari  lodges and Suites are really set up for couples but we can put up to two extra beds in at £30 per bed.

Getting ready to reopen!

Here at Pentre Mawr we've been busy getting ready to reopen for weddings just as soon as the Welsh Government says we can. We were delighted to be visited by our local MP, James Davies, who has been so supportive of us and other wedding venues in North Wales. It was great to be able to tell him how wedding venues work and how we need a longer lead-in time than pubs and restaurants to reopen, so our couples have an opportunity to finalise their important wedding plans.

With a little imagination, we’re excited to be able to share with our couples our plans to ensure each wedding day is both safe and as special as they always wanted it to be. Please get in touch with any queries, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Just want to say a huge Thank You to all our Couples!

Like everyone else we’ve been struggling with the lockdown, trying to manage our business, looking after our staff and if I’m totally honest just wondering where the next pennies will come from. It’s been incredibly stressful. But having heard what some couples and venues are going through we realise just how lucky we are to have such wonderful couples who have been so understanding as we’ve tried and usually succeeded to move their dates. We can’t wait to re open and have your weddings here. In the meantime we beavering away, keeping on top of everything to keep it all smart and ready for your big day. This will pass and you’ll be able to tell your children and grand children just how you managed in the Covid lock down. So for now we just want to say we think you’re all wonderful and Thank You!

People are Amazing! Watch our Virtual Wedding Show around

I’m a really strong believer that the right people come into your life when you need them most.

Like many venues, we’ve been helping our lovely (if not slightly stressed) couples who’ve had to move their weddings. All wedding business owners are concerned about jobs for staff, the fantastic caterers and other suppliers who make wedding days so special.

Daf and Steve from LoveClic wedding photographers have just been amazing. These guys are great, they make every wedding day they do here great fun. I never need to be worried about our lovely couples when they’re here, they make everyone smile. We just love having them at Pentre Mawr.

So they got in touch to see how we were doing and gave us some ideas. Then they put together this virtual show around which can be viewed below. Graham and I, as total amateurs, videoed it and they made it look so much better. As if that wasn’t enough, they then decided to get in touch with some of our couples who got married here to do a promo video for us. I can’t thank them enough.

So just to conclude, we’re here for you. Like everyone, we’re not doing amazing, but we’re okay. We’re the lucky ones. All of us who are healthy and safe and whose families are healthy and safe should feel immensely grateful. This will pass, the earth is healing and we’ll all come out the other side, hopefully more appreciative of the wonderful lives we’ve been given and the wonderful world we live in.

Stay safe everyone!

The Sun will come out tomorrow!

My Amazing Staff and Our COVID-19 Update

So we’re all stressed out beyond belief. The phone hasn’t stopped ringing, brides in tears, us in tears and no definite end in sight. And then this morning one of my lovely couples messaged me to say how wonderful she thought the message Lorna, (still my manager till her maternity leave finishes at the end of this month), had put online. I hadn’t seen it but I want you all to see it now. It made me cry, then cheer and then thank God for the wonderful people we manage to surround ourselves with. Bless you, Lorna, you're a star! Please take a look…

The sun will come up again…

… And in all the madness, Mother Nature does her best!

We would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been so supportive to us and the surrounding local businesses. We’ll all be here when things get back to normal. Lots of the pubs are doing takeaways, and it is more important than ever to support your local shops. We’re here if anyone needs us to deliver, shop or help in anyway. Please don’t hesitate, get in touch. So to make you smile we thought we’d show what wonderful Mother Nature has done in the space of a few days to brighten our lives.

What we're doing about Coronavirus

Pentre Mawr is both a hotel and wedding venue.   We also do self-catering and our self-catering enquiries are on the up as people try to organise holidays were they don’t have to mix with other guests.  Our lovely couples are so worried about their weddings and rightly so.   It’s a scary time.   So, from today we’re cancelling all non-wedding related bookings.   So our rooms, suites and lodges will only be used for weddings parties.  The virus can only live for 72 hours on a hard surfaces and much less time on fabrics and we will be using antibacterial sprays on all surfaces. We only ever do two weddings a week so more often than not there are 5 days between events.

As a business we have access to chemicals cleaner through our wholesalers.   Please believe me when I say we have stocked up with both antibacterial surface cleaners and anti-bacterial soap and we will be using them.

So here’s the message to all our lovely couples, we are here and opened for you.   We’re doing everything we can to support you.   As the phone hasn’t stopped ringing if you have any concerns please do get in touch by email and I promise I will answer as soon as I possibly can.  As I said in our previous blog, In Ireland, while they are stopping large gatherings, they’re allowing up to five hundred people as long as it’s in a marquee. Our marquees are used at most twice a week and we’ll be taking the correct precautions after use.

So yes, it is scary and I know from some of our couples whose weddings are coming up very shortly that they’re very worried but we’re on it!!!! Try not to panic and enjoy the run up to your big day.

Pentre Mawr Open Day Sunday 15th of March 12 to 4pm

We want everyone to know that we’re going ahead with our open day tomorrow. Please don’t be offended if we ask you to use hand gel as soon as you arrive but we will be handing you a glass of bubbles immediately afterwards. Pentre Mawr is truly an outdoor venue and we want to offer some reassurance to all  our couples that we’re taking all the right precautions for everyone’s safety. We have antibacterial spray which we’re using liberally and we’ve changed from our lovely Gilcrest and Soames soaps to antibacterial soap and paper towels which will be incinerated after use.

In Ireland, while they are stopping large gatherings they’re allowing up to five hundred people as long as it’s in a marquee. The virus can only live on a hard surface for up to 12 hours. Our marquees are used at most twice a week and we’ll be taking the correct precautions after use.
